The Ref. Grand prize winner

when nice things happen to nice people

Workshop participants come in all shapes, sizes and from all over the world. It's my experience that they all come for different reasons also. Some want to experience the great american landscape, some to fill portfolios with images but most importantly to me, they all come to share the passion we have for doing landscape photography in a group setting with like minded people.

After the exhilaration of meeting new people, photographing the treasures of these areas and producing marvelous prints, the question often arises, What now?

Larry Cal of, a longtime workshop participant, has found many outlets for his creative spirit. A wonderful personality coupled with the ability and desire to learn the craft of landscape photography, Larry as leaped up the learning curve as quickly as any I have known. He has been a pleasure to know and work with and I take great pride in his accomplishments. None more so than his grand prize winner (above) in this years Cowboys & Indians magazine March 2007 issue.

Larry tells the story:

The image was done in Jackson , Wyoming, on a ride in a horse drawn sleigh in the elk refuge just out of town in Grand Teton National Park. During the harsh winter thousands of elk come down from the neighboring mountains. Stopping several times to view the elk we found that some of the bull elk were fighting in the snowy fields. Following several shots, that seemed to lack that something special, the three in the image above were spotted. Noting the human like traits that make wildlife so special to those of us that do nature photography, the scene took on a jousting match like feeling and the table was set perfectly when "the referee" appeared. All he needed was a striped shirt and a whistle!

Friends ... last year's prize winner from Larry Calof

Having the dedication to f/8 and be there can pay dividends in many ways. The trill of the chase and the excitement of the hunt are what we share. Larry's work clearly shows this. Life is an adventure and the key is to keep it going!
