About the Workshop

This is a -door to door- experience from airport arrival to departure. We take care of everything. All transportation and lodging are included!

F-8 And Be There workshops and Steve Kossack Photographing The Great American Landscape presents a 5-day fall workshop in the spectacular and beautiful wonderland that is The Colorado Plateau. We will be photographing and exploring some of the most beautiful country on earth! This is a unique opportunity to experience these breath taking places during the fall. We will be chasing color and light in two of the most wonderful national parks in the Southwest along with the surrounding area. Some of the most photographed and sought after places in the southwest will be ours under a full moon. Our workshop will be based in beautiful Moab, Utah for our entire workshop. With it's breathtaking location in the very center of the our itinerary, our workshop will be easy and productive. We will experience the best and still be in the heart of paradise!

Southwest photographer and host of the DVD series Steve Kossack: Photographing the Great American Landscape will lead this workshop. It’s size and design lends itself the flexibility to travel and photograph the available light and color of this exciting area during our 5-day shoot. The principal discipline will be landscape photography in the field.

where and what is the colorado plateau?

The Colorado Plateau is a physiographic "province," a region geologically and topographically distinct from other parts of the West. Originally named the "Colorado Plateaus" by explorer John Wesley Powell, the "Plateau" is in fact a huge basin ringed by highlands and filled with plateaus. Sprawling across southeastern Utah, northern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and western Colorado, the Colorado Plateau province covers a land area of 130,000 square miles. Of America's 50 states, only Alaska, Texas, California, and Montana are larger.

Canyonlands National Park preserves a colorful landscape of sedimentary sandstones eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. The Colorado and Green rivers divide the park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze and the rivers themselves. While the districts share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character and offers different opportunities for exploration, learning and some of the most spectacular photographic locations in the southwest.

Arches National Park preserves over two thousand natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. In some areas, faulting has exposed millions of years of geologic history.The extraordinary features of the park, including balanced rocks, fins and pinnacles, are highlighted by a striking environment of contrasting colors, landforms and textures.

This Workshop

This workshop is small by design. We will explore as much of this magnificent plateau on foot or vehicle as possible. You can do as much or a little as you like. Sunrise and sunset opportunity will be a part of each day. Our days will be spent almost entirely in the field. It will allow for ALL levels of photographic experience. There will be no lectures or product endorsements. Personal instruction will be available at all times. The opportunity to photograph and share with the group will always be present. A Print discussion of your work along with an exhibition of Steve's images will be a part of our workshop.

Weather, Equipment, Etc.

No one can predict weather in this ever changing environment, especially at this time of year. It might be mild in the daylight hours with cold mornings and chilly nights. We might find snowstorms! The region is a land of changing weather. Our hope is always for passing weather with warm afternoons AND FALL COLOR, however, this magical location has never disappointed. You can do this trip with any format or type of gear. Digital or film and at any level of experience. A tripod is of course a must.

The Schedule

You will need 5 days; 2 of them are weekend days:

Arrive Salt Lake City, Utah by midday. Transportation to all locations, including the return to Salt Lake City on Tuesday is provided. A sunset shoot if travel times permit.

We are based in the remote and beautiful setting that is Moab Utah. We will spend all four nights of our workshop in the same location. This will make our daily shoots more comfortable with only photo gear in the vehicles. Moab is located at the center of our itinerary and is central to all our shooting. All walks and sunrise/sunsets shoots will be at your option. This workshop will be paced to take in the fall splendor. We will be taking advantage of any and all weather situations. We will be driving to most locations and we will make the most of all photographic opportunities open to us. Our itinerary is left open so as to experience color, light and the full moon rising at sunset. We will certainly photograph all the landmarks along with the hidden treasures. Sunrises and sunsets will most likely be the highlights of the trip. We will be working in the field from before sunrise to after sunset. Our group size will make it possible to do many things, in all directions. Sharing with our small group along with personal instruction, will always be available. Or no instruction at all, if you prefer. It's about your photography! You may come back with well over 1,000 frames!

Please Remember

Weather is unpredictable. We may be subject to road closures but they are infrequent. We are hoping for fall color but we will do all and anything open to us. We will be traveling in 4-wheel drive SUV’s and do not expect weather conditions to be of concern. However, anything is possible in this shoulder season. Bring warm clothes, smiles, lots of film or bytes. The days will most likely begin well before sunrise and end well after sunset.

The Cost

The cost of this trip is USD $2,395. This includes all transportation to and from all shooting locations as well as pick up and drop off at Salt Lake City, Utah. You are responsible for your own travel arrangements to and from Salt Lake City. Your hotel accommodation is also included as part of the workshop fee. Rooms are shared, two participants to each room. A single, private room is available for an additional $550.

Although we will most likely eat our meals together, sometimes a break is nice. Therefore, you will be responsible for your own meals.

The full workshop payment of $2,395 will be required when you register. If you need to cancel a full refund (less $200) will be provided but only if a replacement for you can be found. If we have to cancel the trip for any reason you will receive a full refund.
