Ghost like images from South Coyote Buttes

Southwest photographer and host of the DVD series Steve Kossack: Photographing the Great American Landscape will lead this workshop. It's size and design will lend itself the flexibility to travel and photograph the available light and color of this exciting area during our 5-day shoot.

Where are the Landmarks of the Southwest?

Found in the heart of deserts southwest. This magical area surrounds the town of Page Arizona. Lake Powell and Glen Canyon dam are near by. Page will serve as our base and we will spend our 4 nights there. It is a full service city and everything needed for our comfort and travel can be found there. It is approximately a 5 hour drive from Phoenix.

The Wave

This is the "E" ticket of our grand trip. Reached by a 6 mile roundtrip hike (it's more than a long walk ....... but not a great deal more) with gains and losses in elevation and some sand. You must be willing to spend the entire day hiking and shooting and be in reasonable physical condition. This jewel is ever changing in different light and season. You've long waited and wished for your chance to see and photograph here, and now you will.

Upper Antelope Canyon

The magic of light and color in upper Antelope Canyon

In the 80's we all wondered where these magnificent photographs were coming from. Now we know. Now you will have your chance to image it yourself. A true wonder of the world. It's not a cave and it's not exactly canyon like. You won't soon forget the experience here.

Lower Antelope Canyon

A completely different experience awaits us in Lower Antelope Canyon. This one is a lot more open and its features are a lot more exposed. We will be climbing up and down and wondering how they did this with photographic equipment (or anything else) before the steel ladders were built a few years ago. Time is unlimited here and you may go though your entire photo kit!

Horseshoe Bend

One of the most spectacular views in the entire southwest is The Colorado River at Horseshoe Bend

The Colorado River makes a Horseshoe Bend just below Glen Canyon dam here. You will be some 1500 feet above the river on the cliffs trying to capture the seen before you. Simply breathtaking is the only way to describe it.

Alstom Point

This location is not easy to find and has almost 30 miles of dirt road to reach, but it's worth every minute. Moonscapes on the way make this Overlook of Padre Bay on Lake Powell an awesome sight! It will be one of our highlights as a sunset shoot.

Weather, Equipment, Etc.

No one can predict weather in the Southwest, especially in winter. Cold nights and cool days make for great hiking conditions. We are hopeful of snow on the ground  and passing storms but please remember that there is no guarantee. This is an expedition. Our travel may be restricted by impassable roads. Some of our destinations only permit a specific day for our use. If we can't get to the trailhead or roads prohibit travel, we can't go! We will make adjustments to our schedule as need be.

This trip can be done in any format and at any photographic level. Backpacks will need to be light and compact for hiking. A tripod is a must. Both film and digital shooters welcome.

The Schedule

You will need 5 days. 2 of them are weekend days.

      Saturday January 5:
Arrive Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport by midday. Transportation to all locations, including the return to Phoenix on Wednesday is provided. A sunset shoot if travel times permit.

      Sunday January 6 - Tuesday January 8:

Our very full itinerary will encompass some or all of the magical landmarks of this area from Horseshoe Bend with a 3/4 of a mile hike with a slight elevation gain and loss with some sand leading to this awesome panorama on the cliffs above the Colorado River as it sweeps past and turns just below Glen Canyon Dam. We'll experience Upper Antelope Canyon with soft subtle winter light!. Also the cool and deep sandstone of Lower Antelope Canyon in the quietness with it's steel staircases and winding passages.

Sunrise and Sunset photography will take place each day.

The cliffs overlooking Padre Bay on Lake Powell at Alstrom Point are an experience few see and Majestic Wah-Weep Bay at the first light of dawn rings in another cool crisp day on the plateau. The South Coyote Buttes wilderness is a wonderland of hoodoo's and mystery and of course the "A" ticket is North Coyote Buttes and The Wave, with a 6 miles round trip hike into a world of "candy cane color!"

      Wednesday January 9:
An optional last sunrise and our return to Phoenix and departure flights for home.

Please Remember Weather and climate is unpredictable. We may be subject to road closures but they are infrequent. Please remember that our day at the Wave is subject to road closure also and an alternate shoot will be substituted if we can not get to the trailhead. We will be traveling in 4-wheel drive SUV's and do not expect weather conditions to be of concern. However, anything is possible. Bring wet protection clothes, smiles, lots of film and/or bytes. Our days will begin well before sunrise and end well after sunset!
