About the Workshop

F-8 And Be There Workshops and Tours presents a mini-workshop in the spectacular and beautiful wonderland that is Northern Arizona. From Thurs October 27, through Monday October 31, 2005 we will be photographing and exploring some of the most beautiful country on earth! This is a unique opportunity to explore The Landmarks of the Southwest that you have long awaited. We will be chasing color and light in some of the most sought after locations. From dawn to dusk the grandeur of "color country" will be ours to photograph and experience in a small group and at our own pace. Some of the most photographed places in the world will be ours for 5 days of field photography!

Southwest photographer and guide Steve Kossack will lead this workshop. It's size and design will lend itself the flexibility to travel and photograph the available light and color of this exciting area during our 5-day shoot.

Where are the Landmarks of the Southwest?

Found in the heart of deserts southwest. This magical area surrounds the town of Page Arizona. Lake Powell and Glen Canyon dam are near by. Page will serve as our base and we will spend our 4 nights there. It is a full service city and everything needed for our comfort and travel can be found there. It is approximately a 5 hour drive from Phoenix.

The Wave

This is the "E" ticket of our grand trip. Reached by a 6 mile roundtrip hike (it's more than a long walk ....... but not much more) with some gain in elevation and some sand, this jewel is ever changing in different light and season. You've long waited and wished for your chance to see and photograph here, and now you will.

Upper Antelope Canyon

In the 80's we all wondered where these magnificent photographs were coming from. Now we know. Now you will have your chance to image it yourself. A true wonder of the world. It's not a cave and it's not exactly canyon like. You won't soon forget the experience here.

Lower Antelope Canyon

A completely different experience awaits us in Lower Antelope Canyon. This one is a lot more open and it's features a lot more exposed. We will be climbing up and down and wondering how they did this with photographic equipment (or anything else) before the steel ladders were built a few years ago. Time is unlimited here and you may go though your entire photo kit!

Horseshoe Bend

The Colorado River makes a giant turn just below Glen Canyon dam here. You will be some 1500 feet above the river on the cliffs trying to capture the seen before you. Simply breathtaking is the only way to describe it.

Alstom Point

This place is very hard to find and has almost 30 miles of dirt road to get to, but it's worth every minute. Moonscapes on the way make this Overlook of Padre Bay on Lake Powell an awesome sight! It will be one of our highlights as a sunset.

Who Is This Trip For?

* It's for photographers and nature lovers of all levels. * It's a photography workshop. It's a day long hike. It's a weekend getaway. * It's a traditional workshop. * It's for you if: * You like working in the field from sunrise to sunset. * You want to learn about landscape location and light * You want to learn about equipment and strategies used in landscape photography * You like traveling with like-minded people, and making images and new friends.

This Workshop

This workshop is small by design. It will allow for ALL levels of photographic experience. There will be no lectures or product endorsements. Personal instruction will be available at all times. The opportunity to photograph and share with the group will always be present. A Print discussions will be a part of our workshop, as will workflow and all aspects of field landscape photography.

Weather, Equipment, Etc.

No one can predict weather in the Southwest, especially in monsoon season which can begin as early as June. It might be wet at times. It might be very hot. Evenings are usually cool but please remember that there is no guarantee. Our travel may be restricted by impassable roads. The wave is by permit only and we have only one day for it. If we can't get to the trailhead (8 miles of dirt road from the highway) we can't go! We might have the same situation getting to Alstrom Point. Both are unlikely at this time of the year, but as I've stated, there is no guarantee. We will make adjustments to our schedule as need be. This trip can be done in any format and at any photographic level. A tripod is a must. Both film and digital shooters welcome.
Rock & roll trivia provided :-)

The Schedule

You will need 5 days. 2 of them are weekend days.

      Thursday October 27, 2005:
Arrive Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport by midday. Transportation to all locations, including the return to Phoenix on Monday is provided. A sunset shoot if travel times permit.
      Friday Oct 28:
Our day begins with a Sunrise shoot at Horseshoe Bend. We will be walking 3/4 of a mile with a slight elevation gain and loss with some sand to be on the cliffs before first light! Our mid day will be spent photographing Upper Antelope Canyon. A very full day will end on the cliffs overlooking Padre Bay on Lake Powell at Alstrom Point.
      Saturday Oct 29:
Sunrise will find us photographing majestic Wah-Weep Bay from a location just outside of Page. Mid day will be spend exploring and photographing Lower Antelope Canyon and the new "Secret Slot". Sunset will again find us at back at Horseshoe Bend completing the sunrise/sunset photographic experience.
      Sunday Oct 30:
This is it! Our day to explore, experience, hike and photograph North Coyote Buttes and The Wave. We will most likely be out on the trail (actually there is no marked trail) for 12 hrs! We will come back very tired but happy, with memories and hopefully, great images!
      Monday Oct 31:
An optional last sunrise and our return to Phoenix and departure flights. You'll have images to share around the Thanksgiving dinner table!!

Please Remember Weather and climate is unpredictable. We may be subject to road closures but they are infrequent. The area usually sees only sporadic rain in monsoon season and it quickly clears making for wonderful images. We will be traveling in 4-wheel drive SUV's and do not expect weather conditions to be of concern. However, anything is possible. Bring wet protection clothes, smiles, lots of film or bytes. The days will most likely begin well before sunrise and end well after sunset.

The Cost

The cost of this trip is U.S. $1995. This includes all transportation to and from all shooting locations as well as pick up and drop off at Phoenix. You are responsible for your own travel arrangements to and from Phoenix. Your Page Arizona accommodations are included (Double occupancy - 2 persons to a room, single supplement $350). Although we will most likely eat our meals together, sometimes a break is nice. Therefore, you will be responsible for the cost of your own meals.
